Name:Uriel

Canon: Paradise Lost
Character: Uriel
Timeline: End of Paradise Lost
Personality:Uriel is extremely faithful. He believes in the good of the world, and has no qualms about sharing his views with others. He encourages people to believe in God and the sacrifice His son made to conquer Sin and Death, but as long as they believe that there is some God, and that they should be good, he is glad for them. He will openly praise any good that he sees, and encourage more where he can. He also supports taking an active role in life. Just because you hear something, even if you believe it does not mean that you should not try to see it for yourself. It is a different thing to experience than it is to hear of, but it still does not offer a reason to Sin. Instead it offers a reason to do more good, including seeing and praising God's work with your own eyes, and doing God's work with your own hands.

He is also very skilled with sympathizing with how others feel, and understanding how those feelings are reflected in their actions. Rather than disparaging or chastising a person for doing something wrong, he would rather praise them for what good he can find in a situation and help them see why it is that their actions are wrong as gently as possible. He does not judge a person, as that is God's domain, but he can see what is good and what is sinful and try to help a person do more good.

His own morals are also very strict, and he would never intentionally seriously hurt anyone that is not from Hell, and would only harm someone else if it was the only way to save them from even greater harm. Even fallen angels and Satan himself, Uriel would rather talk with than fight because he knows better than any other angel except perhaps Abdiel could why they fell, though he will fight back if provoked.

Uriel is very emotionally stable, and usually very calm and gentle. He can also occasionally get excited over one thing or another, but it is not easy to rile him. From fury to exuberance he remains fairly calm. Perhaps even more predominately, he is steadfast and reliable. He is youthful, and even naive. While he can see far and has a great ability to understand others and the world, he cannot always see through a lie or hypocrisy. He is skilled, however at reading people's actions and words to find the meanings behind them. If the lie is not perfect or is reluctant, Uriel has a chance of seeing through the lie. He may at times seem even cold because of how much he sometimes distances himself with his talk of God and right and wrong and morals, and even from a unwillingness to get too involved in changing or manipulating the will of humans, but that will quickly break down as he finds that for whatever reason God has put him in this situation with no orders.

He does not suffer from any 'sins' in the way that humans are born with sin, but that does not mean that the temptation is not there. He could still be swayed by a sinful act, however he will not sin without keeping God's will and a pure love in his heart. Because he has suddenly lost God's guidance and is in a situation not in the plan He showed Uriel, Uriel cannot know what is still forbid by God and what is part of His plan. Because of this, even when Uriel might make a small sin, such as interacting with humans where there is no instruction to, or even healing them or saving them without God specifically telling him to, Uriel can remain pure because he only is doing what he can to save God's creation, the creation that Uriel has long loved from afar. As another of God's creations, he has faith that by doing what he sees to be good, he will not fail God.

Uriel was given dominion over the sun because of his far-seeing eyes so he could act as a sentinel. Because of the fascination and love the angels that stayed by God's side had for Earth, and his lofty vantage point, he has only grown more and more fond of Earth and humans. He was saddened to see their fall, and even felt that it was his fault that he did not see Satan entering the garden until God absolved him from fault.

Uriel's love for the people goes beyond what is rational, and it is never a sort of romantic sort of love, but is instead a bit akin to the love one would feel towards a truly great book, or a piece of art in the way that lovers of these media sometimes fall in love. Even when he makes friends with people he will remain somewhat disconnected since he feels distanced from them because they are a sort of creation, a great craft of God. It is a strange love, but it is still one that grew from the bottom of his heart.

Background: In the beginning there was just God, heaven, and hell, but then God created His Son, and the Angels. The Angels sang God's praises and worshipped Him with pure love. Between heaven and hell, there was Chaos. God sent the Son into Chaos and had the Son create the universe, especially Earth. Most of the Angels praised and marveled at the new creation, however Satan was jealous. He gathered other angels who were jealous of and angry about the creation of Earth. They began to discuss and decided to all wage a war against God and Heaven, except for Abdiel. Abdiel was forgiven and fought alongside Uriel and the other angels to defend Heaven. The war waged on, and Uriel was among those angels who defeated some of the offending angels by rending through their armour to damage them so greatly that they fled.

The third day, God sends the Son to end the battle, wherein he casts Satan and the other dissenting angels into Hell. Though not explicitly mentioned in canon, as a part of characterization it is important to mention that this interpretation of Uriel would find this to be a bitter victory, because even though he could agree with Satan or be tempted to, he could still understand how Satan was driven to desire this war.

Uriel does not see Satan create Pandemonium, nor anything else that happens in Hell, but he does meet Satan again soon though he did not know it to be Satan at first. A Cherub approaches Uriel, asking for direction to Earth. Uriel offers it, unable to see through Satan's perfect transformation nor lies. It wasn't until he sees Satan's expression change later when Satan thinks that he is far enough and unwatched, alighting upon a mountain top. Uriel rushes and warns the other angels that there is an imposter, initiating a search for Satan. Satan is thrown out of Paradise, and Uriel returns to his post on the Sun. Eight days later, Satan returns and corrupts Eve and Adam. God throws them out of Paradise and all of Heaven and Earth shudder at the fall. God has Uriel and all the other Angels alter the universe so that the Earth's axis is now tilted so the constant temperate climate can no longer be enjoyed. Michael, one of the other Archangels then gives Adam hope by showing him the future of the world in the last book of Paradise Lost. Uriel, being another Archangel, would know this future as well, and know what is to come in the Earth of his world.

Abilities/Additional Notes:Uriel has many powers as an angel. He possesses a flaming sword and diamond armour that was given to him by God. He is strong enough to quite literally lift hills, however this could be powered down to physical strength closer to Superman if its natural level is considered game-breaking. He has six wings, and can fly, though he can fly even faster by riding the rays of the sun. His normal top speed would be as fast as a jet plane, but nearly teleportation on a sun-beam. In Adstringendum, he will find himself unable to fly to the Sun, however. He has nearly unlimited acuity to sight, though however acute it is, he will not be able to see past the wastes. He can also see clearly in the dark as well as light. It should be noted that his other senses are at the same level as a normal human's.

Uriel can also shape matter, if he so desires. This is close to deciding that what has been offered to him by God is not good enough. This works roughly on a principal of equivalent exchange, though he can change one material into a completely unlike material. True creation of something from nothing, however, is limited to God and His Son. As an extension of this, plus his existence as a spirit rather than a mortal body, Uriel can change his form to any living creature. Naturally he has no gender, and his appearance blurs the lines between genders. He merely defaults to the male pronoun for simplicity and in part because he does not have a woman's chest, but has no reason to correct someone from calling him a girl since he could be female if there was need for it.

Another element he gains from being a spirit is that he is very difficult to kill. In time his wounds will heal, as Satan heals from what would be a death-blow in a night. This does mean that if he can be captured, or put in a situation where he will keep gaining injuries without escape, he will be in constant pain for as long as he is trapped or until the injuries heal slower and begin to accumulate until he dies. This is especially troublesome as he has trouble seeing through subterfuge, being rather naïve. Because of Satan's trickery, he does have a sense of suspicion, though it is weak. His strictly good and faithful morals also create another huge point of weakness and exploitability.

It should also be noted that he can sing with a heavenly voice and play any instrument he picks up.

Sample Journal Post: [Uriel blinks into the screen, his long blond hair catching a bit of the wind. He was wearing a sparkling clear breastplate of some gemstone, and a white roman-esque wrap over that. Behind him a set of wings spread to reveal that there were actually three separate wings to each side, and then settled back into a more comfortable position.]

What is this? Like those things to call distant people He spoke of. Phones... [He was more talking to himself than the device. He looked to the sky with a slight frown,] This is wrong. This is nothing I have seen within His creation. Yet this sun looks so much the same, and some things I can recognize.

Lord?

Sample RP: Uriel walked into the church, absorbing the grandeur and the ornaments. It almost seemed silly to put so much expense into a holy place, but it was the art- the expression of the human spirit- that really brought beauty to the place. Uriel genuflected before the altar. It felt odd while feeling right at the same time. He had stood in the direct presence of God and sung His praises while basking in His light, yet now he was making a more symbolic gesture to express the same. He felt a sense of emptiness, having no way to reach his Lord. Was this what Faith felt like? To believe in a God you had no direct or provable contact with?

He smiled up at the icon of the Son, suddenly feeling a sense of peace. Yes, this was faith, and he had faith that this had purpose. A purpose even grander than the plan for humanity. One that included his angels and further tested them as well. Even without God's orders, he knew that God expected goodness, purity, and a lack of Sin. He needed to help the souls here, to make their time easier, and to bring goodness to them. He prayed that he could remain faithful to God, to make Him happy. He knew he was fallible, but to dissent from his Lord was unthinkable.
